Top 5: Songs Ruined by the Internet

The internet is both an amazing and horrifying thing in our world. There’s access to virtually everything at our fingertips, but there are also some not-so-amazing sides of the web. In today’s society, my generation likes to make a lot of bad jokes on the internet, discover new memes, and completely exhaust all of these new jokes. I will admit, I do enjoy a good meme. My old roommate was a huge fan of memes so she always kept me updated on what was currently trending. However, the internet seems to have this recent obsession with finding older songs and making jokes out of them; I am not saying that these songs were good to begin with, but now I can’t even listen to some without thinking of whatever I’ve seen on Twitter or Tumblr about the song. Song Recommendation of the Week

Happy Good Friday to those of you that celebrate it, and happy weekend to all! As many of you probably know, Easter is this coming Sunday and it also means the end of Lent which I am very excited for because I gave up sodas this year and it’s been an almost painful process for me. In fact, I could say that I’d rather be sedated, which is a terrible pun to bring me to this week’s song recommendation, “I Wanna be Sedated” by the Ramones. The Ramones are one of my favorite punk rock bands ever; this song was the first song by the band that I ever heard. Growing up, my parents always played their favorite bands around the house or in the car. I remember my mom always playing various 80’s punk bands and pop groups while driving me to school or gymnastics. “I Wanna be Sedated” was a catchy tune in my seven year old-opinion, and it will always be a fond memory of my first moment of my love for punk rock. It’s energetic, it rocks, it’s loud, and it always puts me a good mood. Check it out.

Song Recommendation of the Week

Earlier this week one of my friend’s sent me a link and she said, “If you were a cop this would be you.” I clicked on the link and it took me to the music video for “Sugar” by Robin Schulz. Sure enough, as the cop started singing along and dancing while he was driving, I realized that this was a pretty accurate representation of me while I drive (minus the endangerment of everyone’s lives). Now I know this song is not new and is very popular right now, but ever since she sent it to me, it’s been stuck in my head all over again and I am not complaining. If you remember Baby Bash’s “Sugar Sugar” from 2003, then you’ll most likely recognize the sampling of his chorus in this song. I think that Robin Schulz does a great job of creating a faster tempo to this mix that makes you want to get up and dance, making it an instant hit. Francesco Yates’ vocals also add a refreshing take on the song, and will have you singing along with him in no time. Check out the video here.

St. Patrick’s Day Spirit

Can you guess what today is? I’m sure if you read the title of this post then you can get it right. It’s my favorite holiday- St. Patrick’s Day. Yes, when I say favorite I do mean that it beats Christmas, Halloween, and any other holiday you can think of. St. Paddy’s Day is filled with dancing and singing and I look forward to it every year. This year, I want to share with you five of my favorite songs I listen to every year as I celebrate this wonderful holiday. Read More

Road Trip Playlist

It’s officially spring break for me!! I’ve been waiting for this week since the first day of spring semester, and I could not be happier. Every spring break, my mom and I go skiing with some family friends up in Keystone, Colorado and it’s easily one of the best weeks of the year. We spend two days driving from Dallas, Texas to Dillon, Colorado, while making stops at The Big Texan, Cadillac Ranch, the New Mexico state line, Capulin Volcano National Monument, and a quick, sit-down lunch break in Denver. With all this driving, it can get pretty boring pretty fast, especially when you have to spend the first seven hours staring at the flat, dry lands of west Texas. To make it a little more fun, I create a playlist each year for the perfect road trip and I want to share it with y’all.

Song Recommendation of the Week

You know that scene in the movie Easy A where Olive is talking to her webcam and says she wishes her life was an 80’s movie but sadly John Hughes did not direct her life? I’ve felt the same way about my life since I saw my first John Hughes film. However, I think my favorite part about 80’s movies is the music; that decade produced a lot of my favorite songs, including this week’s song recommendation, “If You Were Here”. The original version of this song was done by the Thompson Twins in 1983 and is amazing, but I want to recommend the less synthesized, smoother Cary Brothers’ cover from 2007. The song is beautifully heartbreaking. What once was a mutual love has started to become one sided, as the guy who is singing says, “do not want a part of this anymore”. It describes a love that has ultimately fallen apart and can no longer be saved. The weirdest and best part of this song is that it makes the listener feel some sort of nostalgia, even if they haven’t quite experienced this feeling before; the song awakens a sort of bittersweet feeling in the listener, but it’s worth the heartbreak to listen to it. Check it out here.

Movies and Music Moments

When it comes to telling a story, there’s no better way to define a scene than with music. Movies will often use music throughout their story to set the tone of a particular scene and invoke an emotional response in the audience because sometimes the song can say all the words the screenwriters could not. Whether the song is being used for a serious moment, or for a lighthearted dance moment, the music still manages to evoke an emotion in the audience. This brings me to a new kind of post I want to start doing– looking at music moments in movies.  Read More

Song Recommendation of the Week

This week’s song of the week was very hard to choose, but I’ve decided to share a song from one of my favorite bands, Royal Blood. They released their self-titled debut album back in late 2014 and I fell in love with them; every song on that album is pure perfection in my eyes. While I enjoy all of their songs, my favorite is this week’s recommendation, “Blood Hands”. In fact, I love this song so much that while I was studying at Pepperdine and had 8:00am classes everyday, I used this song as my alarm clock. Aside from the loud, catchy guitar riff, one of the best things about this song is that it has powerful lyrics throughout it and you can feel the anger and heartbreak that inspired it. One line that sticks out to me in particular is, “love came and went faster than a penny spent in a slot machine,” because I think that it sets the tone of the whole song in just a few words; this song is anger and heartbreak and it screams at you. All of Royal Blood’s songs are pretty energetic and dynamic, so if you want to get hooked on them like I did, check out “Blood Hands” here.

Prepare to be Thunderstruck

Back in 2015, AC/DC announced they would be doing a 2016 World Tour, a tour that included a stop right here in Dallas. Being the huge fan of the Australian rock band that I am, I was going to do whatever it took and spend whatever amount of money I had to in order to finally see one of my favorite bands live. I got the tickets, invited one of my best friends who also enjoys the band, and Tuesday night we went down to the American Airlines Center for what I would definitely call one of the best nights of my life.

Despite all of my excitement, I had several friends ask me why I would want to see a bunch of old men rock out to 30-40 year old songs; AC/DC is often referred to as a classic rock band despite the fact that they’ve put out three albums in the 21st century alone. However, in defense of AC/DC, I encourage every fan of classic rock or hard rock to check out the band live because if you haven’t seen Angus Young do a ten minute guitar solo then you have not LIVED!!
